The Archivist of the United States, Dr. Colleen Shogan, is preparing to permanently place the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in the National Archives Rotunda in Washington, DC. Joining our nation’s Founding Document–the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Right–this will be the first time since 1952 that the National Archives will welcome a new, permanent display to the Rotunda. 

The 19th Amendment represents the single largest enfranchisement in American history. Its ratification in 1920 was a significant milestone in the campaign for women’s suffrage, after a decades-long struggle to realize Abigail Adam’s call to “Remember the Ladies.” 

But first, we need your help to make this happen. To permanently display the 19th Amendment, the preservation of the document is top-of-mind. Donations will support the encasement of the document, which uses state-of-the-art technology to reduce possible damage from light, temperature, and humidity and ensure its ongoing security. 

Like the Founding Documents on view in the historic National Archives Rotunda, the 19th Amendment is among the most iconic records of our nation’s history. Permanently displaying the original document will ensure its meaning and impact will continue to inspire millions for generations to come.
