2025 National Archives Foundation Civics for All of US Teacher Institute Travel Guide

Participants are responsible for booking and paying for the costs of their own travel and lodging arrangements. The National Archives Foundation will provide a $1,050 stipend to each participant to help offset the cost of travel and lodging at the end of the Institute. Full participation is required in order to receive the reimbursement.

Getting to Washington, DC 

Airports
The greater metro Washington, DC area has three major airports: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). 

In terms of ground transportation, Reagan Airport (DCA) and Dulles Airport (IAD) have their own Metro stops on DC’s WMATA Metro system. To get from Baltimore/Washington Airport (BWI) to Washington, DC, travelers can take the Maryland Transit Authority’s MARC train system or Amtrak to Union Station DC; travelers can also take at Maryland Transit Authority’s Commuter Bus 201 from the Baltimore/Washington Airport (BWI) to the Shady Grove WMATA Metro station to travel to different parts of DC. Taxis, Ubers, and Lyfts to Washington, DC are available from all airports.

Amtrak or Bus
Union Station DC is the main train station and bus station for Washington, DC. Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses service Union Station daily. Union Station has its own WMATA Metro stop, which travelers can use to travel from Union Station to other parts of DC.

Parking
The Foundation recommends booking parking in advance through SpotHero, a parking reservations app. To reserve a parking spot, visit the National Archives SpotHero Parking Page. When you use this link a portion of the proceeds are donated to the National Archives Foundation to support our civic mission.

There are also multiple private parking facilities located within a two-block walk of the museum. Parking fees range from $10 – $30, depending on the time of day and length of time parked.

  • 600 block of 9th Street, NW: Parking garage located in the Gallup Organization Building, on 9th Street between F & G Streets, NW.
  • 900 Block of E Street, NW: Parking garage located on E Street between 9th and 10th Streets, near the corner of 9th and E Streets, NW across from the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Headquarters.
  • 600 block of F Street, NW: Parking garage located across from the Verizon Center in the Terrell Place Building, on F Street, NW between 6th and 7th Streets, NW.
  • 800 block of D Street, NW: Two parking garages are located on D Street between 8th and 9th Streets, NW, on each side of the street.
  • 400 block of 8th Street, NW: Parking garage located within the Lansburgh Building, on 8th Street between D and E Streets, NW near the CafĂ© Atlantico restaurant.
  • 500 block of 8th Street, NW: Parking garage located within the DLA Piper Building, on 8th Street between E and F Streets, NW


Where to Stay

Motto by Hilton Washington DC City Center
The National Archives Foundation has set up a courtesy room block with a limited number of rooms at a discounted rate for Institute participants at Motto by Hilton Washington DC City Center. The hotel is located at 627 H Street Northwest, Washington, DC, 20001. Room reservations are available on a first come, first served basis. Participants are responsible for booking and paying for their own hotel accommodations. This hotel is located at the Gallery Place/Chinatown WMATA Metro station, which is one Metro stop away from the National Archives building on the Yellow or Green lines. Motto is also a fifteen-minute walk from the National Archives building. Getting to the National Archives

Entrances to the National Archives Building 
The National Archives building has multiple entrances. The Research Entrance is on Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest. The Special Events Entrance is on Constitution Avenue Northwest.

Metro
To get to the National Archives by WMATA Metro, take the Metro’s Yellow or Green lines to the Archives/Navy Memorial station. The Archives/Navy Memorial stop is across Pennsylvania Avenue from the Archives building. You can check the Metro schedule and plan your trip on wmata.com.

Bus
Metrobuses 30, 32, 34, 36, 53, A42, A46, A48, P1, P2, P4, P17, P19, and W13 stop at the National Archives on Pennsylvania Avenue. To get to the Special Events Entrance, you will need to walk around the building and enter on the Constitution Avenue side of the building.

Daily Street Parking
Limited street parking is available on 7th Street, Constitution Avenue, and throughout the neighborhood. Spaces are metered with a two-hour maximum. All must pay to park in the Central Business District (CBD) and only individuals with disability placards and tags may pay to park at Red Top Meters.
