Director of Marketing and Communications

Mattie Gainer returned to the National Archives Foundation in 2025 as the Director of Marketing and Communications. Mattie previously worked at the Foundation from 2018 to 2021 as the Senior Programs and Communications Manager. 

Most recently, Mattie was the Engagement and Outreach Lead for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Industrial Technologies Office. In this role, she led a team of eight to develop and implement a communications and stakeholder engagement strategy for DOE’s manufacturing innovation portfolio. Mattie also directed the execution of events and campaigns with leaders ranging from the U.S. Secretary of Energy and White House National Climate Advisor to CEOs of the largest manufacturing trade associations in the nation. 

Mattie specializes in mission-driven storytelling and leading cross-functional teams. In her current role at the Foundation, Mattie leads the marketing and communications team and oversees the Foundation’s communications, marketing, and strategic partnerships for exhibitions, museum programming, donor campaigns, and events. 

Mattie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Communications and Political Science from Elon University in North Carolina. Outside of work, you can find Mattie doting over her baby nephew, nerding out about  history, or reading novels with her cat, Eleanor (named after former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt herself).
